Tips for Encouraging Church Members
1. When Christians get together, they talk about the weather, sports, jobs, and many other things. Make sure when you come together, to encourage each other spiritually. Everyone faces discouragement in the outside world. Make sure that inside the walls of the church, members encourage one another in their daily walk.
2. Use scripture to encourage other members. Under the Reach IN tab, you will find an Encouraging Bible Verses page. Here you will find over 100 Bible verses grouped according to need. For example, there are verses to share with those who have health or financial problems and verses to share with those who are grieving, etc.
3. Don’t forget to encourage your leaders, both the paid and the unpaid. Encourage everyone who does a job in the church from the groundskeeper to the kitchen help, the secretary to the nursery worker, the choir member to the pastor. All will feel discouragement at some time. Be specific in your encouragement. False or non-specific encouragement, such as “Good Job!,” is not helpful. Attend and participate in the activities of your church and in doing so encourage the workers.
4. Greet and hug as many church members as you can before and after church. Even better, learn something about each one that you can ask about to show your interest in them.
5. The Bible tells us to “rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.” Romans 12:15. We do a decent job of weeping with those who weep. Be sure to celebrate with those who rejoice. Celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, births, job promotions, etc.
6. Although you may encourage someone who never acknowledges anything you do and never encourages you, keep on anyway. The Bible commands us to do to others what we would like them to do to us.
7. Encourage children so that they will grow up to be encouragers.
8. When you encounter someone who is hard to love, pray for a change in your heart; forgive them; and heap on the
kindness.
9. Mentor a younger Christian the way Barnabas mentored Paul and John Mark. If the Lord leads you, be willing to relinquish leadership of a ministry when another person is trained and willing. The Lord will not be finished with you, but He may have
something else for you to do. Service to God’s church is not about personal glory, but about the glory of God.
