An encourager must first reach up. An encourager must be grounded in the Word and in close relationship with God. Christians are not immune to trials and troubles in life that can be discouraging. We may have problems with our health, troubles in our family, tension at work, worries about finances, concerns about the state of our country, hassles with traffic, distresses at home, dilemmas with friends, and roadblocks to becoming all that we can be. Because of these troubles all around us, we must reach up to God, the source of our encouragement. God is always there when others in our lives cannot be. By reaching up to God and accepting His encouragement, we become a living testimony of His love and grace. We can only do this by getting close to God.
