When I think of reaching down in a spiritual sense, I think of the Good Samaritan reaching down and picking up the beaten robbery victim on the side of the road. I think of the men who reached down and pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. I think of Peter reaching down to the lame beggar by the temple gate and lifting him up. I think of the Good Shepherd finding the lost sheep and bending down to lift it up on His shoulders. I think of God who, like the writer of Psalm 113: 7
(ERV) says, “lifts the poor out of the dirt and rescues beggars from the garbage dump.”
The spiritual exercise I envision is reaching down and lifting up. Just as reaching down physically seems more strenuous than the other three exercises, reaching down and lifting up as an act of encouragement requires more effort than the other three types of
encouragement. The reason is that the people who need this kind of encouragement are in situations where they cannot help themselves; they have been separated from society by their circumstances. Most have even been ignored, even by churches. I am speaking of the aged and the sick in nursing homes and facilities throughout our country. I am speaking of people with physical and mental disabilities. I am speaking of orphans and other needy children. I am speaking of the homeless. I am speaking of people in other countries who have never had the opportunity to hear the wonderful news of the Savior, Jesus Christ, who died for them.
In this section, I will be sharing tips and links to help you Reach DOWN and lift up those in need in your community and world.
